4 shot, 1 killed in attack at party honoring Kenneka Jenkins in North Lawndale

One person was killed and three others wounded in a shooting early Sunday in North Lawndale, police said.

A group of people, including a 28-year old man, a 33-year-old woman, a 25-year-old man and an 18-year old woman, were in the 1300 block of South Christiana Avenue about 3 a.m. when someone fired shots, Chicago police said.

Three of the victims were taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center. Jacquez Harris, 28, was pronounced dead, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

The older woman was in fair condition with gunshot wounds to the legs, and the younger woman was in good condition after being shot in the left leg, police said. The other man took himself to Rush University Medical Center, where he was listed in good condition.

Neighbors said the shooting happened after a block party for Kenneka Jenkins, a 19-year-old woman who died while locked inside a freezer at a Rosemont hotel in 2017. She used to live on the block.

The party honors Jenkins’ memory and has been held annually around her birthday, May 27, since her death, neighbors said. Crowds gathered for the party over the weekend on Douglas Boulevard from Homan to Spaulding avenues. Empty liquor bottles, red cups and pink streamers littered the area on Tuesday.

One neighbor said he was in his bedroom when he heard at least 25 shots fired.

No one is in custody, and detectives are investigating.
