Locals flocked to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on Tuesday, after the iconic body of water froze over as Washington, DC suffered its coldest holiday season in over two decades.
Dozens of Washingtonians were seen walking and playing on the frozen surface of the long rectangular pool, which is located in the National Mall, sandwiched between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.
According to local media, many people went ice skating on the Reflecting Pool over the weekend, despite National Park Service regulations prohibiting the activity in the interest of public safety.
The US capital faced extreme weather over the Christmas period, with temperatures plummeting to lows of -13 degrees Celsius (55.4 Fahrenheit) on Saturday, causing water pipes to burst and leaving homes without power.
