Quincy Animal Shelter will host a fund-raiser and adoption in partnership with a newly renovated pizza and gelato shop on Wednesday, the businesses announced.
The adoption event will start at 11:30 a.m. at the newly renovated Boardwalk Pizza and Donato’s Gelato. It will celebrate the businesses opening and “feature several adoptable dogs while shining a spotlight on the shelter’s urgent needs and the work it does to save animals.”
One dog the shelter is highlighting is named Phil, a 10-year-old mutt the shelter rescued last month.
“On Aug. 3, Phil was found in a Quincy Park by good Samaritan,” said Quincy Animal Shelter President Sandra Sines. “He’s a small dog. He weighs about 18, 20 pounds, and he’s a mixed breed, maybe a Shih Tzu or poodle-type dog, white and tan. But when they brought him in, his belly was hanging practically hitting the ground, and there was some kind of growth. Something wasn’t good going on.”
Phil had a “very serious hernia” that had gone untreated for an extended time, Sines said, and required a $4,000 emergency surgery. He went through dental surgery on Friday, she added and will need a follow-up for his hernia.
The shelter reached out to the community but no one came forward for the little dog.
“He’s been through a lot, and he’s still a happy guy,” said Sines. “He’s very sweet.”
Community members are invited to come out to the event and bring their own dogs, the release said. The event will feature a blessing of the dogs by a pastor from St. Gregory’s Parish in Dorchester, and all dogs will receive a “Pup Cup” crafted for their enjoyment, along with complimentary pizza and gelato for the humans.
“Members of the public looking to adopt a new family member are urged to come meet some adorable dogs who are looking for loving homes,” the organizations said.
