At least nine people have died in a huge fire at a hospital in northern Iran. The nine people who died were patients. State media gave this information on Tuesday. Iran’s state TV reported that the fire broke out at 1:30 pm local time (2200GMT) at the Kaim Hospital in the city of Rasht, about 330 kilometers (about 205 miles) northwest of the capital Tehran, including six women and three men.

Shahram Momeni, the head of the city’s fire department, said on state TV that an electrical short circuit occurred in the basement – which houses the intensive care unit – causing the massive fire. Momeni said emergency workers rescued more than 140 people, patients and hospital staff, trapped by smoke, and 120 of them were admitted to other medical facilities.

He said an investigation has been ordered. A video posted online showed smoke billowing out of the hospital at midnight. Iranian media occasionally reports fires at hospitals and clinics, which are mainly attributed to technical problems. Earlier, in 2020, an explosion caused by a gas leak at a medical clinic in northern Tehran killed 19 people.
