According to a report, a single punch was so powerful that the officer became unconscious for at least a minute and his memory was also affected for a few days. On Tuesday, 24-year-old Devesh Raj was sentenced to five weeks in jail. Devesh was convicted in a case of intentional injury in March this year. According to the report, Devesh will appeal against the sentence.

What is the whole case?

According to the court, the victim was one of the four police officers who were sent to an area in Circular Road in the central business district on June 25, 2022. A member of the police had informed them around 3 am that more than 10 people were arguing. Earlier, Devesh and his friend Ishwar Ravi were drinking alcohol nearby. When the police arrived, they saw a group of individuals, including Devesh and Ishwar, creating a ruckus in Circular Road. The officers, who were wearing civilian clothes at the time, approached the group and introduced themselves as police officers. While the victim and another officer were interviewing a member of the group, Devesh came to them to confront the man. Soon after, Devesh threw a punch, which hit the left side of the police officer’s head.

Lost memory for three days
According to court documents, the accused was drunk when he punched the victim. As a result of the accused’s punch, the victim lost consciousness for at least a minute. The officer was later taken to Singapore General Hospital by ambulance. The victim was given a seven-day hospitalisation and was reported to have suffered from memory loss and severe headaches for at least three days following the incident. For causing hurt, Devesh could have been jailed for up to three years, and ordered to pay a fine of SGD5,000 (roughly Rs. 3.08 lakhs) or both.
