2100 South project timeline, details

Construction on the major roadway will continue through 2025.

A massive overhaul of Sugar House’s main artery — 2100 South — officially began this week.

Drivers can expect to be ensnared in traffic along the roadway through 2025.

The project focuses on a section of 2100 South between 700 East and 1300 East. It’s funded by an $87 million road bond that city residents approved in 2018.

Once completed, 2100 South will begin and end with four lanes — but narrow to two lanes between 1000 East and McClelland Street.

The plan aims to improve and shorten crosswalks to make it safer for pedestrians, and add more space for bus stops. It will also improve left-turn lanes along the roadway, city officials say.

What will be closed and when?

Over the next few months, crews will work on the north side of 2100 South, replacing landscaping and improving storm drains.

Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction on 2100 South during that phase, according to the city’s project schedule.

This summer, work will shift to the south side of 2100 South. Traffic at that time will still be restricted to one lane in each direction.

But it could get worse, with a possibility of one-way traffic only (westbound) in a single lane for up to two months as crews work on water lines in the area, officials warned during a recent news conference.

Crews will also conduct utility work this summer at the 900 East intersection, which will cause “lane shifts.”

By spring of next year, work will refocus to the area of 2100 South between 700 East and 900 East.

Officials estimate the project will be completed by November 2025.

How to stay informed about major updates

Salt Lake City created a project website that details the planned construction schedule and other important information.

Sugar House residents and visitors can sign up for email updates on the project by emailing 2100SouthSLC@gmail.com.

You can also call or text questions about construction to a project hotline the city set up at 801-406-1868.

Officials encouraged people to “make a plan” before heading to 2100 South, either by familiarizing themselves with the latest construction phase or by calling businesses ahead of time. That way, you can strategize how to visit your favorite shops and stores.

“Sugar House is open,” Sugar House Chamber of Commerce representative Erika Wiggins said Thursday. “You can get to the businesses.”
