New Delhi. Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Monday met party president Sonia Gandhi and apprised her of his desire to contest for the president’s post. Giving this information, sources said that Sonia said that it is better for the party to have many candidates in this election and their role in this will be neutral.

Sources also said that during this meeting, Sonia Gandhi also rejected the notion that there would be a “baseline candidate” from the party in this election. On the other hand, in the backdrop of Tharoor’s meeting with Sonia, the Congress said that anyone is free to contest elections and this has been the consistent stand of the party leadership and no one’s permission is needed to contest elections.

Tharoor, a Lok Sabha member, has met Sonia Gandhi at a time when she recently indicated that she may contest the Speaker’s post. Sources said Tharoor, a Lok Sabha member, met Sonia Gandhi at her 10 Janpath residence and told her that he was willing to contest for the Congress president’s post.

Sources also informed that after Tharoor expressed her sentiments, Sonia Gandhi said that contesting multiple candidates is better for the party and their role will remain neutral in this election. It is believed that after meeting Sonia Gandhi, Tharoor is expected to announce his intention to contest the elections soon.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “Whoever wants to contest the election is free and welcome.” This has been the consistent stand of Congress President and Rahul Gandhi. It is an open, democratic and transparent process. No one needs anyone’s permission to contest elections.

Tharoor starts online petition
On the other hand, Tharoor on Monday argued the online petition in which “young members of the party have demanded reforms and said that every candidate for the post of President should take a pledge that if elected, he will fully implement the ‘Udaipur Navsankalp'”. Will do.’

Tharoor shared the petition on Twitter and said that it has been signed by over 650 people so far. “I welcome the petition which is being circulated by a group of young members of Congress. It calls for constructive reforms within the party. More than 650 people have signed it so far. I am happy to advocate for it.

The online petition said, “As a member of Congress, it is our desire that the party should be strengthened in such a way that it reflects the hopes and aspirations of our nation.”

It also said, “We appeal to every candidate contesting the election of Congress President to take a pledge that he will take all the members of the party from the Block Committee to the Congress Working Committee and to take charge of the party.” Udaipur will fully implement the new resolution within 100 days.

One family one ticket
The Congress had released the ‘Udaipur Navsankalp’ after the Chintan Shivir held in Udaipur in May last, in which several reforms were suggested in the organization of the party. Among these, the issues of ‘one person, one post’ and ‘one family, one ticket’ arrangement are prominent.

The notification for the election of Congress President will be issued on September 22 and the process of filing nominations will go on from September 24 to 30. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 8. In case of more than one candidate, voting will be held on October 17 and results will be declared on October 19.
